Apple will set up a "chip design center" in Germany

Publish Date: 2021.03.12

The global "core" predicament continues to intensify, and giants from all over the world have increased their layout in the chip field.

The global semiconductor shortage has become a worrying issue, which may hinder the recovery of economies that have been affected by the new crown epidemic.

At the beginning of the year, Honda, Volkswagen, Ford and other car companies announced that they would cut production or close some factories due to insufficient chip supply. Subsequently, consumer electronics industries such as mobile phones and panels are also facing a lack of "cores", and the entire semiconductor supply chain is affected to a certain extent.

The global "core" predicament continues to intensify, and giants from all over the world have increased their layout in the chip field. According to foreign media reports, Apple plans to establish a European chip design center in Munich and invest more than 1 billion euros in the next three years to expand the scale of its R&D team.

On Wednesday, local time, the company said in a statement that it will move into a 30,000-square-meter factory in central Munich by the end of next year and plans to hire hundreds of employees.

In this regard, Apple CEO Cook said in a statement: "I am extremely excited about everything that the Munich engineering team is about to explore-from exploring 5G technology to bringing power, speed and connectivity to the world and other next-generation technologies. ."

At present, Munich, Germany is already Apple's largest engineering center in Europe. Nearly 1,500 engineers from 40 countries are responsible for different work projects, including power management design, application processors, and wireless technology. The region is also one of Europe's leading technology centers. Apple's long-term partner Infineon, battery company Varta, and chemical company DELO are also located in Munich. And the "digital ten-year plan" proposed by the European Union may make Munich a key player in the global science and technology field in the next 10 years.

Apple said that the new factory will be the location of Apple's growing wireless division and Europe's largest mobile wireless semiconductor and software research and development base. Prior to this, Apple reached a $600 million agreement with chip design company Dialog Semiconductor in 2018 to introduce the design team of the main power chip used in the iPhone and other devices into the company.
