The charges relate to emissions cheating in a total of 434,420 Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche branded cars sold mainly in the United States and Europe. The four are accused of developing an engine operated by illegal software. The software allows the engine to emit less fuel under conventional test conditions than under normal driving conditions.
