California's accumulative zero-emission vehicle sales exceed 2.5 million units, and charging facilities continue to expand

Publish Date: 2026.01.26

The California Energy Commission (CEC) released a report this week showing that by 2025, the state had sold 2.5 million zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). This data covers EVs, fuel cell vehicles, and plug-in hybrid vehicles, which are not completely zero emitters.

In the fourth quarter of 2025, California sold 79066 new zero emission vehicles, accounting for 18.9 percent of statewide new car sales in the quarter. In contrast, the proportion of zero-emission vehicle sales in the United States dropped from 10.5% in the third quarter to 5.8% in the same period, mainly due to the federal government ending the EV tax credit policy on September 30. In this context, the zero-emission vehicle market in California stands out. As of Q4 2025, there are 149 zero emission models available in the California market, a significant increase from a few years ago, providing consumers with more choices. Since 2019, the cumulative zero emission vehicle sales in the state have increased by over 300%, driven mainly by state clean transport policies, local incentives and market demand. In terms of charging infrastructure construction, California currently has over 200000 public and shared private charging piles, and it is estimated that about 800000 household charging equipment have been installed.
