Publish Date: 2023.08.05

According to Reuters, two people familiar with the situation revealed that India's Commerce Ministry Minister Piyush Goyal held a closed door meeting with several Tesla executives last week to discuss Tesla's plan to establish a manufacturing factory in India.

Tesla has expressed interest in establishing a factory in India to produce low-cost electric vehicles priced at $24000 (approximately 25% cheaper than Tesla's current entry-level models) for sale and export in the local market.

Rohan Patel, senior manager of Tesla's public policy and business development, and Roshan Thomas, vice president of supply chain, also met with members of the Investment India during their visit to India.

The above-mentioned insiders pointed out that Tesla executives had a meeting with Goyal at a hotel located in New Delhi. A person familiar with the situation stated that Tesla's executives met with Goyal along with at least one other government official.

Last week, Reuters reported on a meeting planned by Tesla and Goyal on July 24th, which included land allocation for factories and the establishment of an electric vehicle supply chain. The first insider revealed that Tesla and Goyal discussed Tesla's plan at the meeting, but declined to provide further details.

Earlier, insiders stated that the talks between Tesla and Indian officials were strictly confidential, and Indian Prime Minister Modi and his senior officials closely monitored the progress of the talks.

Tesla and the Indian Ministry of Commerce did not respond to requests for comment.
