On December 6, it was reported by foreign media that Volkswagen Group was reassessing its future electric vehicle strategy formulated by Herbert Diess, its former CEO. At the same time, Volkswagen plans to make in-depth investment in MEB platform, transform MEB platform and extend its life cycle, and plan to integrate SSP structure into MEB platform.

Volkswagen believes that MEB platform can provide the company with a core pillar of greater competitiveness, economies of scale, productivity and profitability. The MEB platform will be extended to 2030 (originally planned to be transited again in 2025). It is reported that Volkswagen will invest 1.5 billion euros to upgrade the batteries, inverters and power electronic equipment of the group's future electric vehicle platform.

The main goal of Volkswagen's electrification strategy is to redesign the MEB platform and extend its life cycle. Blume's new plan is not to migrate to the second platform named SSP in just a few years, but to integrate the SSP structure into the MEB platform from the very beginning. However, some aspects of the SSP architecture will not appear immediately because Volkswagen's current investment is focused on MEB.

The MEB platform is currently applied to many models of the Volkswagen ID. series, including Volkswagen ID. 3, ID. 4, Volkswagen ID. 5, ID. Buzz, and ID Buzz Cargo, and China market ID 6, etc. At the same time, some Audi and Skoda models are also developed and built based on the Volkswagen MEB platform. MEB platform models are currently produced in six manufacturing plants of Volkswagen Group, including FAW-VW and SAIC-VW MEB plants. According to the plan, Volkswagen will add two MEB production bases next year.
