Toyota is asking customers to change their orders to an improved version of the Harrier, which will go on sale in September, the report said. Toyota is reportedly considering letting the company and its dealers cover the difference, as the new model could cost around 100,000 yen ($733.35) more. Toyota did not disclose the price and improved features of the new model.

The report, citing multiple unnamed dealers, said it was the first time Toyota had canceled an order due to problems with the automaker. Toyota had no immediate comment on the report.

Last year, Toyota sold 74,000 Harrier SUVs in Japan, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.

Currently, Toyota is struggling to escape the impact of the new crown pneumonia epidemic blockade and global semiconductor shortage. Last week, Toyota told its suppliers that its global production this year would fall by 18% from plans at the beginning of the year.

Toyota said earlier this month that it was forced to stop taking orders for the Land Cruiser SUV because it exceeded its capacity.
