Skoda produces its own wiring harness

Publish Date: 2022.06.08

According to foreign media reports, as the escalating situation in Russia and Ukraine interrupted the supply of automotive wiring harnesses, Skoda is producing wiring harnesses at its Czech headquarters plant.

Some European plants at Skoda, other Volkswagen Group brands, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Ford have suspended production since the escalation in Russia and Ukraine forced Ukrainian parts factories to cut production. Skoda suspended production of the all-electric SUV Enyaq for eight weeks starting March 3 due to a shortage of wiring harnesses caused by supply bottlenecks.

Currently, Skoda assembles wiring harnesses for the Fabia minivan at its Mlada Boleslav plant in Czech Republic. Skoda said in a statement that wiring harness production for Octavia, Kodiaq, Karoq and Suberb models will begin in the coming weeks.

Czech cable harness manufacturer PEKM Kabeltechnik built the necessary production equipment in an assembly hall provided by Skoda. Thirty-five female workers at PEKM Kabeltechnik's Lviv plant in Ukraine assemble wire harnesses in this assembly hall, while training new employees.

Skoda has also received additional wiring harness production from German company Kromberg & Schubert's Kenitra plant in Morocco. In addition, Kromberg & Schubert has now increased the production of wire harnesses at its plant in Zhytomyr, Ukraine.

Karsten Schnake, Skoda's board member responsible for procurement, said in a statement: "We have been working closely with our partners over the past few weeks to minimise the impact of the escalation in the Russian-Ukrainian situation on the supply of wiring harnesses. Production in Ukraine was resumed in a short period of time, and production capacity has been greatly increased.” Schnake also said, “We have the highest respect for our Ukrainian partners who continue to supply us.”

Skoda also plans to replicate the production of high-voltage cables needed to charge electric vehicles and will start production in Romania from the end of June.
