Recently, according to overseas media reports, due to the impact of the epidemic, MINI brand sales showed a sharp decline. As a result, BMW group, MINI's parent company, had to cut 400 jobs at the MINI Oxford plant.

       It is understood that the workers affected by the job cuts are mainly employed by Gi Group, which will make the final decision based on a combination of years of service, skills and disciplinary record. Gi Group employs 950 of the plant's 4,000 or so workers, most of whom are full-time workers on the production line.

       The key reason for the job cuts is that BMW is preparing to switch from three to two shifts at its factory starting in October. Previously, production forecasts had changed in light of the global economic downturn, with capacity expected to fall from 1,000 vehicles a day to between 800 and 900.

       Especially during the lockdown, BMW's Oxford plant was closed for nearly two months. Bob Shankly, director of human resources at MINI, said: "Like other carmakers, we have to adjust our production forecasts for 2020 accordingly. This will give us the flexibility we need to adjust production in the short to medium term as global markets evolve."
