Another chip giant exposed to layoffs in China

Publish Date: 2023.12.20

According to Bloomberg, insiders have revealed that UK chip design company Arm Holdings Plc has recently laid off more than 70 software engineers in China, but the company will transfer some positions to areas outside of China.

According to insiders, about 15 of the laid off employees will be assigned to different positions related to projects in China. Another person familiar with the matter stated that the position that has been laid off is currently held by contract software engineers, who have participated in projects involving Arm's global business.

In a statement, Arm stated, "In order to ensure that the Chinese software ecosystem can fully leverage the maximum advantages of Arm's performance and functionality, Arm is restructuring its software engineering resources in China, with a focus on direct support for local developers."

Due to unfavorable factors such as sluggish demand for electronic products, chip giants such as Qualcomm laid off employees globally earlier this year, and Arm also joined the ranks. In November, due to a decline in smartphone sales, Arm provided a disappointing revenue forecast.

Jason Child, Chief Financial Officer of Arm, told analysts in November that due to faster growth in other parts of the world, China's contribution to Arm's global sales has decreased from 25% to about 20%.

In addition, due to the development of patent designs widely used in mobile devices in the United States, Arm has also been affected by US technology export restrictions on Chinese companies.

Arm China is the sales office of Arm in the largest semiconductor market in China. According to insiders, earlier this year, Arm China laid off more than 100 employees, most of whom worked in the research and development department to develop new chip technologies for the Chinese market.

Arm outsourced support for Chinese clients to Arm China through a department called Global Service, which once had as many as 200 employees. According to insiders, more than 70 employees in the department have been laid off, and some of them are still looking forward to being resettled.

Arm China did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
