According to foreign media reports, Brazilian Ministry of Industry official Uallace Moreira told the media on September 15th that Brazil will end its tax exemption policy for imported electric vehicles and gradually increase tariffs to 35% within three years.
Previously, Brazilian automakers lobbied for this measure, overcoming opposition from Chinese automakers selling electric vehicles in the country. Moreira stated that the final details are still under discussion, and the specific timing will be determined by the Minister of Industry and Vice President Geraldo Alckman.
Moreira said, "What measures can we take to stimulate domestic electric vehicle production and make imported cars more difficult or expensive?" He also stated that some countries have already adopted protectionist policies in this area.

Last week, the European Commission launched an investigation into whether to impose punitive tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to protect EU manufacturers from the impact of low-priced Chinese electric vehicle imports.
Moreira stated that the country will gradually impose tariffs on imported electric vehicles to avoid market impact, while also in line with the government's plan to increase private investment in environmental technology.
Moreira also stated that the Brazilian government will issue a temporary measure within 15 days to launch the second phase of the "Rota 2030" plan aimed at improving the efficiency of the automotive industry, which will be renamed the "Green Mobility Program".
The new plan will use tax breaks to stimulate energy efficiency projects and establish a mechanism known as "environmental taxation" by Moreira. The plan will stagger the taxation of industrial products based on the energy efficiency of the vehicle model, the recyclability of the product, and the content of local components.
