Europe's auto industry is facing another wave of layoffs. Is it electric?

Publish Date: 2023.03.01

According to foreign media, Stellantis plans to cut up to 2000 jobs in Italy this year to reduce the loss caused by the transition to electric vehicles.

It is reported that this auto manufacturer, formed by the merger of PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler, reached an agreement with the local trade union in Italy to reduce 4.3% of the 47000 employees in the country, and the company made similar layoffs last year. The trade union said in the statement that the planned layoffs will mainly come from workers who are not directly involved in production, and they will receive benefits including early retirement, as well as two years' wages for older workers.

European automakers have been struggling to cope with inflation and supply chain disruption. In order to realize the electric transformation, the automakers have restructured their factories and promoted cost reduction.

Coincidentally, Ford Motor said earlier this month that it would cut 3800 jobs in Europe because it needed fewer workers to develop and produce electric vehicles.

Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, said earlier this month: "The cost of electrification will have an impact on our business around the world."

It is reported that Stellantis will increase the output of its Melfi plant in southern Italy to focus on the production of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles, and is promoting the plan to build a battery plant in Termoli, which will start production in 2026; It will transform its Turin factory into an electric vehicle center.
