Volkswagen settles dieselgate lawsuit

Publish Date: 2022.05.27

On May 25, Volkswagen settled a class-action lawsuit brought by British consumers over dieselgate for 193 million pounds ($242 million). On the same day, Volkswagen again apologized to consumers in England and Wales, promising to rebuild trust.

Volkswagen and the law firms Slater & Gordon, Leigh Day and PGMBM representing the plaintiffs said on May 25 that they had reached an out-of-court settlement and that as many as 91,000 claims had been resolved. According to a statement from Volkswagen, the company will be solely responsible for the claimant's legal and other costs.

In 2015, a U.S. investigation found that Volkswagen cheated on emissions regulatory tests by using software that could reduce emissions. Volkswagen has faced multiple lawsuits over an exhaust-rigging scandal that sparked the biggest business crisis in the company's history after revealing that some 11 million vehicles worldwide, including 1.2 million in the UK, had illegal software installed.

The Dieselgate scandal has led to VW recalls across Europe costing billions of euros and huge fines by European regulators. VW has so far lost more than 32 billion euros ($34 billion) in vehicle modifications, fines and legal costs due to dieselgate.

Philip Haarmann, VW's chief legal officer, said: "This out-of-court settlement with UK consumers is another important milestone in the Volkswagen Group's continued recovery from the 2015 diesel scandal."
