Volkswagen Wolfsburg plant to resume production

Publish Date: 2022.03.18

The Wolfsburg plant will resume production of the Golf hatchback on March 22, a Volkswagen spokesman told Reuters.

According to foreign media reports, Volkswagen will increase production at its main factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, starting next week. Previously, the factory was suspended for two weeks due to the lack of supply of parts and components in Ukraine due to the situation in Russia and Ukraine.

The plant will resume production of the Golf hatchback on March 22, a Volkswagen spokesman told the media. The factory will resume operations with one shift initially and two shifts a week later. In mid-March, production of the Volkswagen Touran, Tiguan and Seat Tarraco models will be reduced and workers will have shorter working hours.

Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have all been forced to cut production at their German plants due to the lack of spare parts in Ukraine. Volkswagen's ID-series electric vehicle plants in Zwickau and Dresden will take longer to resume normal operations. VW production chief CHristian Vollmer said the Zwickau plant, which makes electric cars from Volkswagen, Audi and Seat, would not resume production until at least early April, while the Dresden plant would remain closed until early April. There are reports that the launch of the ID.5 model, originally scheduled to arrive at dealerships in the first week of April, may also be delayed.

So far, Volkswagen's plants in Emden and Osnabrück have not been affected by the supply disruption. "Within the Emden plant, as things stand, we're going through a difficult time," Vollmer said.

Murat Aksel, head of Volkswagen procurement, said that Ukrainian suppliers are still delivering parts, but the scale of deliveries has been reduced. Meanwhile, VW is looking for alternative suppliers in other regions to build up safety buffers, but the company has no plans to abandon its Ukrainian supply chain. "We will support our suppliers and not let them down," Aksel said. "We will do both."
