Among them, the first electric car will be a mid-size crossover, which will start production this year at Ford's plant in Cologne, Germany. The crossover will use the Volkswagen Group's MEB electric vehicle platform. Ford has previously revealed that it will build a new electric car in Cologne, but this is the first time the company has mentioned the model's body style. Ford has revealed that the electric crossover can travel 500 kilometers (311 miles) on a single charge, with production starting in 2023 and a name to be revealed later in 2022.
The second electric car will be a sports crossover, which will also be built on the MEB platform, also in Cologne from 2024. This means that the production of electric vehicles at the Cologne plant will increase to 1.2 million within six years. Investments in a new electric passenger car built in Cologne are expected to reach $2 billion, Ford said. The investment includes the construction of a new battery assembly plant, which is scheduled to start operations in 2024.
The third vehicle is the Puma small electric crossover, Ford's best-selling passenger car in Europe, with an electric version due in 2024 and built at Ford's plant in Creova, Romania.
The four new electric models in Ford's Transit light commercial vehicle lineup will be: Transit Custom electric van and Tourneo Custom utility compact, both due in 2023; Transit Courier small van and Tourneo Courier utility electric cars, all due to launch in 2024.
Stuart Rowley, chairman of Ford Europe, said in a statement: "In order to meet the mobility needs of European consumers who are transforming, it is absolutely necessary that we move towards a fully electric future."
Ford expects annual sales of its electric vehicles in Europe to exceed 600,000 by 2026. The company also reiterated its target of 6% EBIT margin in Europe by 2023.
It is worth mentioning that two of the above-mentioned seven new models will be produced on Volkswagen's MEB platform, which shows that Ford's electric vehicle partnership with Volkswagen has further deepened. Volkswagen also said on the same day that it has deepened its cooperation with Ford in the field of electric vehicles. As part of the expanded cooperation, Ford will double the number of vehicles produced based on the Volkswagen MEB platform to 1.2 million in the next six years.
"Profitability and speed are now critical to the eventual breakthrough in the European electric vehicle market. We are working together with Ford to improve both," said Thomas Schmall, member of the board of management of Volkswagen. "Today's agreement will further accelerate both companies. electrification process.”
