Volkswagen enters low-cost electric cars

Publish Date: 2021.08.05

Phoenix.com Automotive News Germany's "Auto Weekly" reported on August 4 that in order to further develop its electric vehicle strategy, Volkswagen Group's three major brands-Volkswagen, SEAT and Skoda will launch small electric vehicles in 2024.

According to people familiar with the matter, the Volkswagen brand will launch ID.1 in 2025 and ID.2 in 2027; Skoda will launch Elrog in mid-2024. It is expected that Skoda Elrog will be a compact Crossover model with a design similar to the Audi A1 Citycaryer; West Astra will also launch a similar model. It is expected to mass-produce the small electric car Acandra by the beginning of 2025, which is suitable for commuting between cities and suburbs.

At present, the initial price of the Volkswagen brand small electric car is 19,000 euros, but the price has not been approved by the board of directors of the Volkswagen Group, and the price of the first seat small electric car is also inclined to this.

Volkswagen brand CEO Ralf Brandstätter (Ralf Brandstätter) said that Skoda will lead the development of small electric vehicles within the Volkswagen Group.

Although the Skoda Citigo e iV electric car is very popular, it is not profitable. "We have learned a lesson", "We will continue to develop electric vehicle modules and operating systems, and we will be able to use the SSP scalable system platform and F3 software by 2025 at the latest." Ralph Brantast said that until the SSP system goes online in 2026, Volkswagen brand electric vehicles will continue to use the MEB module platform to produce electric vehicles.
