Batteries are one of the most expensive parts of electric vehicles, and many car companies are currently competing to gain a leading position in this field. For Renault and Nissan, batteries are also a weak link in the two-year cooperative relationship. Both companies purchase batteries through different channels, among which Renault mainly purchases from South Korea's LG.

In an interview, de Meo said: "If we can find a way to collaborate on batteries, then this alliance may become the first car manufacturer to use the same battery module and cross the sales threshold of one million electric vehicles. One of the quotient."

In 2018, the alliance was hit by the arrest of Carlos Ghosn. The current managers of the two companies are working hard to get the alliance back on track, and cooperation in battery technology will become An important test for the future of the alliance.

In the race to produce electric cars at lower prices, the Renault-Nissan Alliance faces fierce competition from other car companies, including Volkswagen. Volkswagen plans to build six battery factories in Europe by 2030.

De Meo said on May 11 that Renault and Nissan are cooperating closely in production and parts procurement. He also said: "We are making many decisions to strengthen cooperation, and battery modules are one of the topics we are discussing now."

The two automakers are still struggling to achieve their own turnaround plans. Nissan announced a record annual loss on May 11, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will also affect Renault's earnings, because Renault owns shares in its partners.
