Intel launches automotive version AI chip

Publish Date: 2024.01.10

According to Reuters, on January 9th, Intel announced that it will launch a car version of its latest artificial intelligence (AI) chip to compete with Qualcomm and Nvidia in the semiconductor market that provides power for future automotive brains.

Intel also stated that it will acquire French startup Silicon Mobility, but has not disclosed a specific acquisition price. Silicon Mobility is designed as an on-chip system technology and software for controlling electric vehicle motors and on-board charging systems, currently controlled by venture capital Cipio Partners and Capital-E.

Jack West, the head of Intel's automotive business, said that Chinese automaker Geely Krypton will become the first car manufacturer to use Intel's artificial intelligence chip system to create an "enhanced cockpit experience" in cars, including artificial intelligence voice assistants and video conferencing.

West pointed out that Intel's new automotive chip system products will adopt the company's recently launched artificial intelligence personal computer technology to meet the performance requirements of automobiles. West revealed that Intel will provide chips that can be used by car manufacturers throughout their entire product line, covering both low-priced and high-end car products, in order to compete with differentiation.

As of now, Intel's chips have been applied to the information and entertainment systems of 50 million cars, but in the semiconductor market required for autonomous driving technology, upgradable car system software, and complex instrument panels, Intel has been surpassed by Nvidia and Qualcomm. "Intel has done a very poor job in promoting our performance in the automotive industry. We need to change that," said West

According to West, Intel will not require car manufacturers to use advanced driver chips designed by Mobileye. On the contrary, car manufacturers can allow Intel to integrate specific features into Intel systems with their own chips at a lower cost.
